YUN Hyong-Keun
1928 - 2007
Representative artist of the Korean Pavilion at the 46th Venice Biennale in 1995
umber-blue (1970's)
Yun Hyong-Keun's umber-blue paintings from his series Cheongimun (Gate of Heaven and Earth) reflect the artist's philosophical contemplation on the turbulent modern and contemporary history of Korea. By mixing umber, which signifies the earth, and blue, which signifies the sky, the artist created a mysterious black color and drew his own solid pillars, similar to the Chinese character for "gate(門)." Inspired by traditional Korean calligraphy and ink paintings, Yun’s oeuvre shows a distinctive feature from monochrome painting in the blurring of colors or empty space.
